Hi friends! I have some exciting news to share...

Eek!!! That's right, the BF (Sean) and I are getting married! We're absolutely thrilled and can't wait to start the planning process.

This past weekend, Sean flew to California to ask for my parents' blessing. He had coordinated the trip with my younger brothers, both of whom came home from college. The visit was kept secret from my parents until the day before his arrival. He arrived in California around noon on Saturday, spent the day with my family, and left first thing on Sunday morning. Throughout his trip, I thought he was paintballing with some friends in the Pocono Mountains. After all, the paintballing story was very believable: Sean had told me about an upcoming paintballing tournament, I had heard a friend call to give him the details, had watched Sean pack all his paintballing gear for the weekend, and hadn't been able to get in touch with him at all on Saturday, which was to be expected given that I thought he was in the mountains. Sean's original plan was to propose sometime over the next two weeks...but he ended up proposing the very same day he flew back from California.

Here is a sampling of the responses we received from our family members once we spread the word:

"Wait...what? Really?" (one of my brothers, who had been expecting the proposal to happen over the next two weeks, rather than within the next 24 hours)

"Well, it's about time! That's great. And tell Sean I have some film for his projector" (my grandfather)

"He proposed? To whom?" (One of my uncles, who has a quirky sense of humor)

"Is she pregnant?" (Sean's grandfather, who also has a quirky sense of humor. And no, I am most definitely not pregnant)

Happy Tuesday, everyone! BF and I both had the day off from work yesterday and it was such a treat to be able to spend the extra time together. We agreed to go out to lunch and discussed the merits of a few neighborhood restaurants. This was our chance to try something new! Someplace exciting! But in the end, we settled on the local diner. He had an omelet and I had a chicken sandwich. Not so new or exciting. We're typically adventurous eaters, but sometimes the familiar favorites just hit the spot.

I think my eating habits are similar to my dressing habits. Although I'm very willing to take risks when assembling outfits, my default mode is to rely on the familiar. Take this gingham shirt and v-neck sweater. I almost always wear them together. And I almost always style them with red (see here for proof). I know that both items fit well and that they work well with a variety of bottoms. And I know that they allow me to look work-appropriate without looking the least bit stuffy. Sometimes you just have to go with what you know, right? (And I would be remiss if I neglected to credit Lisa's post with the inspiration to combine black and white with this particular shade of tomato red. Thanks, Lisa!)

Everybody, Everywear: Black and White

Hi friends! Did you all remember that Tuesday was the "Black and White" challenge over at Everybody, Everywear? Be certain to hop on over and see what the other folks are wearing!

If you're a regular reader of this blog, you may notice that I'm donning a new pair of spectacles. I usually wear contact lenses for the sake of convenience, but truth be told, I actually prefer the look of glasses. When I was in third grade I wanted glasses in the worst way. I can distinctly remember admiring the glasses of a fellow third grade student. She had these amazing teal and purple plastic frames that were just so cool. I was so, so envious and concluded that that I would be eternally happy, if only I could have a pair of glasses as cool as hers. So I wished, and wished, and wished for glasses.

In fourth grade, it became clear that I actually needed to have my vision corrected. So I picked out a pair of frames...and quickly concluded that wearing glasses wasn't as fun as I had imagined. When I went to the optometrist in fifth grade for my annual eye exam, I learned that my vision had become four times (four times?!!!) worse over a twelve month time period. Be careful what you wish for, right?

Thrifty Thursday: Stripes

Hello, folks! It's been a while since my last Thrifty Thursday post, and the New Year seemed like a the perfect opportunity to resume my Thrifty Thursday posts.

I almost included these Michael Kors suede espadrilles in my "Top Thrifts" list. I found these pretties at my go-to thrift store in December 2011, far past espadrille-wearing season on the East Coast. At $13, the price was steep by thrift store standards. But considering that they were a nearly-new pair of Kors Michael Kors shoes, and an item that would work well with my style, the price seemed very reasonable.

And I assure you, I have already gotten my $13 out of these shoes. I didn't dare risk hypothermia by wearing them in the frosty East Coast weather, but I did wear them every chance I got while in California for the holidays. They're amazingly comfortable despite the 4.5" height. And when I wear them, I'm taller than my brothers. That's always a bonus.

Hi friends!

After a much too short vacation in California, I'm now back in New Jersey. Although it's good to return to my daily routine, I miss my family as well as the sunshine and the warmth. There is something so wonderful about having the flexibility to take long walks at will, in 72 degree weather. But alas -- all good things must come to an end, right?

When BF picked me up from the airport, it was 1:00 AM and I was bone tired. He knew I'd cleared out my fridge prior to leaving for CA, so he'd gone to the grocery store for me while I was away. He picked up all of my favorite staples, as well as a few treats:

It's hard to believe that Thanksgiving was just a few short weeks ago. Yet, despite all the many reasons to be thankful, I have found myself caught up in the hustle and bustle -- the general busy-ness -- of this time of year.

This time tomorrow, I'll be on a plane to visit my family in California. I'm very much looking forward to the trip (so lucky that my family lives in a warm place!), though I must admit that I've been feeling stressed by the sheer number of things that need to be accomplished before the holidays. Yesterday, I left the office fairly late, tackled the long commute, and raced to run a few errands before the stores closed at 11:00 pm. I often run errands late at night, but I was feeling anxious and rushed last night. Worried about hitting all the stores before closing time, I phoned the BF to ask if he would be willing to stop at the liquor store to pick up a bottle of wine. He was willing to drop what he was doing to help me, and even went one step further: not only did he pick out a great bottle of wine, but he also remembered to grab a gift bag for the wine. Without my having to ask, he had thought of everything. It was a little favor on his part, but it left me filled with gratitude and relief.

Ho-Ho-Holiday Home Décor

Hi, friends! I always enjoy seeing how others decorate for the holidays, so I thought I would share a few quick pictures of my apartment.

Small Woodlands Reindeer from Coldwater Creek

Since I'm still in the process of settling into my new place (I know, I know, it's been three full months already...), it seemed silly to purchase a real tree this year. Instead, I opted to take the easy route and find an ornament tree. Simple task, right?

I thought I could simply stroll into the nearest Target and buy an ornament tree. Easier said than done. It's surprisingly difficult to find an attractive, well-priced ornament tree at this time of year. I was hoping to avoid ordering online and paying shipping fees. Eventually, I found this decorative thing at Marshall's, and decided it could serve as an ornament tree. But I am a bit perplexed as to its intended purpose. Given that a rooster adorns the top of this contraption, I am not convinced that it was designed to be a holiday item. Your thoughts? What is this item? My best guess is that the hooks are intended to hold coffee mugs/tea cups...but given that this item measures over 3 feet tall, it could become visually overwhelming when placed atop a counter.

Don't remember the portion of the Christmas story when the angel descends upon a rooster? That makes two of us.

Pencil This In

This outfit was entirely inspired by the lovely Eleanor of Shopping the Closet (Thanks, Eleanor!). Eleanor shared the joy of finding a genuine leather skirt while thrift store shopping. This lucky find had occured just days after Eleanor had purchased a similar faux leather skirt from a retailer, and had returned said skirt. The moral of her story was that thrift stores often have precisely what you're looking for, so long as you know what you want and are very, very patient.

Eleanor's post reminded me that I too had found a rather perfect leather skirt while thrifting. It was one of my very first thrift store finds -- a brand new, espresso brown pencil skirt from Laundry by Shelli Segal. The retail tags indicate that it should have sold for $250. I paid $10. I hadn't worn the skirt for several months, but decided it was high time conjure up a way to wear it.

Taking a cue from Eleanor, I brainstormed a list of items that I would love to find at a thrift store. Among these items was a teal or emerald silk blouse, with button-down styling. I had browsed online, hoping to find something like this blouse from J. Crew, but in a different color and with a much smaller price tag. None of the silk blouses I saw online seemed quite right. Even if a $200 shirt were in my budget I just can't justify spending that much on a single blouse, especially given my tendency to spill, snag, shrink and otherwise marr my clothing).

Sure enough, just days after reading Eleanor's post, I stumbled across this teal silk blouse at my favorite thrift store. I felt like I'd won the lottery. This blouse was exactly what I had been envisioning -- and failing to find at retail stores. And, it was only $5.

Given this stroke of good luck while thrifting, I think I should aim "higher" for my next thrift store find. Perhaps a pair of killer Christian Louboutin heels? Or a classic Chanel suit? Or maybe a Birkin bag? #fatchance.

Oh well, a girl can dream!

"Red the Wonder Horse": 25,000 Miles and 15 Kids

Meet my little pony. His official name is "Red the Wonder Horse," but he goes by "Red" around these parts. He is my newest (and only) equine friend and I'm quite delighted with him.

The Saturday after Thanksgiving, BF and I trekked to Flemington, NJ to attend an antiques fair. It was such a pleasure to speak with the collectors and vendors, all of whom were happy to share the history of their items. Several items caught my interest, but I didn't feel compelled to purchase anything.

And then...

And then, I spotted this jaunty fellow. A wooden spring rocking horse with chipped red paint and many, many years of wear. The horse had a rickety frame and had clearly been repaired several times -- all signs that he had been well loved by many children. In fact, someone has written on his back with pencil, "25,000 miles and 15 kids used this. Love, Dad."

I am by no means an expert on rocking horses, but I have gathered that this horse was most likely manufactured by the Wonder Products Company of Collierville, TN between the years of 1945-1948. According to the Randolph County history page, wooden spring rocking horses were first created by William Baltz and named "wonder horses" in honor of Arkansas, which was known at the time as "The Wonder State." As the wonder horses became mass produced, the wooden bodies were soon replaced with plastic.

From an antique standpoint, I would be very surprised if Red is considered a collectible. Wonder horses aren't particularly rare and most collectors would probably say that Red has seen better days. But his collectibility was never what appealed to me. If Red had been in mint condition, with glossy paint and un-droopy springs, I don't think I would have looked twice at him. The fact that there is an inscription on Red's back likely diminishes his "value" as an antique...but it makes him even more special in my eyes. He is a toy that was treasured by several generations, and will now occupy a place of honor in my home.

Color Blocking

Yesterday, Lisa of Respect the Shoes asked her readers about the trend(s) that they have been wearing most frequently. If there is one fall trend that I have embraced wholeheartedly, it is color blocking. The simplicity of solid colors is easily incorporated into my work wardrobe, and the bold contrast adds a fun element of interest. Additionally, color blocking seems to lend itself to usual color combinations (e.g., those Talbots flats I just purchased are fuschia and orange, which seems like a fashion "no-no").

Thanksgiving Weekend Recap: When All Else Fails, Make a Cobbler

Hi, friends! I hope that you all had a fantastic Thanksgiving. I celebrated the holiday with the BF's family and we had a wonderful time. It is truly humbling to recognize how fortunate we are and to express gratitude for our blessings.

Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving Day proved to be a bit eventful. BF's parents were hosting dinner at their house and planned to start cooking around 7:00 AM to have the food on the table by 3:00 PM. Bright and early on Thanksgiving morning, the toilet in their basement powder room exploded (ie, ceramic bowl completely shattered), spewing water everywhere. Since that bathroom is never used, there was no real "mess"... other than the six inches of water that had spread throughout their entire finished basement. Luckily, they have a wet/dry vac and were able to remove most of the water within a few hours of the explosion. But it certainly created quite a disruption. Between their basement toilet, the flooding in my prior apartment, and a recent roof leak in my new apartment, I have never before been so convinced of the force of water!

My contribution to Thanksgiving dinner was meant to be an apple pie as well as a cranberry-apple relish. Both recipes are family traditions, but the apple pie is especially beloved. It is my mother's recipe and she has made at least two of them every Thanksgiving for as long as I can remember. I started helping her when I was in elementary school, so it's a recipe that I could nearly recite in my sleep.

In my head, I have images of my mother rolling out pie crust into perfectly thin, pliable rounds that fit nicely into a pie plate. For some reason, my pie crust simply would not cooperate this Thanksgiving. I made the crust three separate times. And each of those three times, I threw the crust away because the consistency wasn't right (and yes, one of the times I literally threw the crust across the kitchen out of frustration). After plowing through nine cups of flour and three cups of shortening, I decided that enough was enough. On a holiday that is about celebrating bounty, it seemed sacrilegious to waste so much food. So I whipped up a quick crumb topping and we enjoyed an apple cobbler. And you know what? It was still delicious and no one seemed to miss the crust.

Black Friday
As you probably expected, I ventured out before the break of dawn for Black Friday. The stores on my list were Lord & Taylor, Anthropologie, LOFT, J. Crew, Banana Republic, Talbots, and Crate and Barrel. The sales at J. Crew and Banana Republic seemed comparable to their typical sales, so I didn't brave the long lines. I did take advantage of the sales at Anthropologie and LOFT to pick up a few gifts. And Lord & Taylor had some wonderful deals on jewelry that will be perfect for BF's mom.

I tried to focus more on purchasing gifts for others, but I did treat myself to a few things on Black Friday:

Love the bright colors and the jaunty bow. And Talbots was offering 50% off of any one full-priced item, so they were a decent price.

One of the best parts about Black Friday shopping is returning home, eating a leftover turkey sandwich, and collapsing after a long day of shopping. But it was such a gorgeous day outside that I headed to the BF's place to help him rake the yard, and then took a stroll through downtown.

The weekend seems to have passed in the blink of an eye. BF and I explored a large antiques show/fair and enjoyed talking with the vendors to learn the stories behind their ware. I also found a truly special piece for my living room (more on that soon!). I also decided it was high time to paint my bathroom. It was originally a nondescript shade of beige, but it will now be a light and airy cloud blue. I still need to apply another coat, but I can already tell that I'll love the new color.

Snoop (Sort Of...)

One of the more entertaining aspects of moving into my new apartment has been sorting through the mail that continues to arrive for the previous tenant. Naturally, I don't open any of the mail addressed to "Michael W" (not particularly interested in committing a federal offense), but I do take notice of the types of mail he receives. It has been amusing to construct an identity for this person based on his mail. The only definitive thing I know is that he is a teacher and drives a Nissan. Or, at the very least, he is a member of the NJEA and has his car serviced at a Nissan dealership.

Based on the other mailbox contents, it also seems likely that this person was a real "man's man." Witness the following items received:

Since I'm not a particularly outdoorsy person, I hastily concluded that Michael W. and I have very little in common. While he's a member of the NRA, the only gun I've ever used is a glue gun. While I do like to embark on very long walks, I prefer well-lit sidewalks to dirt trails and running shoes to hiking boots. And I'd really, really love for there to be a Starbucks at the end of said long walk.

But then it dawned on me that Michael W. and I might in fact have something in common. My first car, after all, was a red Ford Ranger pickup. I loved driving that truck. It was tough, no-nonsense, and endlessly versatile. While my little truck would never have graced the pages of Truckin', it was probably premature for me to assume that Michael W. and I are so very different.

The very next day, I opened the mailbox and spotted two very different pieces of mail, also addressed to Michael W: catalogs for Tiffany & Co. and American Girl.

Speaking of knock-offs, doesn't this Steve Madden Brizza satchel remind you of the Alexa satchel from Mulberry?

I love the shape, size, and ease of the Alexa bag. But the price point is absolutely over my budget...by approximately $1000. I stumbled across a similar bag from Steve Madden while browsing TJ Maxx a few weeks ago. The Brizza satchel has the top handle, crossbody strap, gold-toned hardware, and slouchy silhouette that are reminiscient of the Alexa. Although the material is faux leather and the hardware is on the chintzy side, the quality is reasonable for the $35 price. Until I happen upon a Mulberry bag at the thrift store (fat chance!), this will just have to do. I can't seem to find this bag online, but if you're interested, TJ Maxx may still have a few.

Thrifty Threads At Home - Kitchen

As many of you know, I recently moved to a new apartment. The circumstances surrounding the move were admittedly unfortunate, but I couldn't be happier with my new place. This apartment has such charm and character, with small details that really make it feel like home. Over the next several weeks and months, I plan to post a series of installments to share my new place with you. I hope you enjoy!

KITCHEN

The kitchen could easily be my favorite room in the entire apartment. Because the layout of the apartment requires you to walk through the kitchen in order to access any of the other rooms, the kitchen truly feels like the heart of the apartment. And although there is only one small window in the kitchen, the light from the other three rooms pours into the kitchen, brightening up the space.

My dishwasher -- a real treat!

The kitchen is also the room where the apartment's 1920s details seem to be the most intact. When the realtor showed me this apartment, she mentioned that the landlords had considered demolishing the china cabinet when renovating this unit. The realtor convinced them that the cabinet was an added value, and she finally talked the landlords into leaving it in the unit. I'm so glad she did, because this gorgeous cabinet works as a focal point in the kitchen, in addition to providing precious storage place.

Citrus fruits have always been one of my favorite design motifs, especially for the kitchen. Surrounding myself with pictures of lemons and oranges helps to create an environment that feels fresh, clean, vibrant, and cheerful. I already owned several pieces of citrus-themed artwork from my prior apartment and have reused those pictures to decorate the breakfast nook. Expanding on the citrus theme, these three lemon prints were a special purchase for the new apartment. Each of these pieces is actually a label from lemon crates shipped during the 1930s-1950s. At $20 per print, this artwork was relatively inexpensive. By framing the prints in economical standard size frames (12"x16"), I was able to avoid the expense of having custom frames created. I did splurge on the premium textured mats to accentuate the colors in each label, but even so, the cost to purchase, mat, and frame these three prints was less than $150 in total.

Window Shopping: Bang Up Bangles

There is something so smile-inducing about wearing an armful of enamel bangles. They are lightweight, colorful, stackable, and they clink together with an almost musical quality.

But some of them can be so gosh darn expensive. Take, for instance, this chartreuse green Caleche bangle from Hermes.

It will "only" set you back $380. Hmmm. For those with even deeper pockets, the Balcon du Guadalquivir bracelet may be just the ticket. Also offered by Hermes, it is $660.

What's that you say? Several hundred dollars for a small piece of metal isn't quite in your price range? Well, it's not in mine, either. After some online browsing, I saw that Kate Spade, Coach, and Milly each offer some equally fun enamel bangles in the $70-100 range.

These are certainly more reasonable than the Hermes bangles but the price still seems steep, especially if you plan to wear these in multiples. On a whim, I decided to click over to J. Crew is now selling thin solid-colored enamel bangles in a number of fun colors such as Fresh Strawberry (below), Lemon Gimlet, and Georgia Peach, as well as neutrals such as Black and Gold.

The price? Just $20 each. But wait -- if you buy 2 or more, they are currently discounted 25%. Using the online promotion that takes an additional 25% off of all orders over $150 ("STAYWARM", through 11/9), these little bangles could be yours for just $11.25 each. What a deal! And for those who prefer a wider cuff or a little bling, J. Crew might have a bangle for you as well.

First off, thank you so much for your suggestions in response to my last post! As you recommended, I am going to be on the lookout for a cute pair of fingerless gloves as well as a pair of brightly-colored leather gloves. I sense that the thrift stores may have a good selection of new/almost new gloves, so I'll start there.

While wearing this outfit, I half expected Sue Sylvester to round a corner and quip, "Ellen, that blouse is just insane." The oversized bow certainly seems like something that would appeal to Emma Pillsbury. Luckily, it's been quite a few years since anyone openly mocked my fashion choices. Sure, I've occasionally noticed people eying me with puzzled glances when I've worn particularly audacious color combinations or mixed busy patterns. But no one has been downright mean.

On the other hand, there have been several occasions where I've been called by the wrong name, as Sue Sylvester often does to Emma Pillsbury. No one has ever done it intentionally, of course. Throughout my student years, teachers have called me Amy, Lindsay, Maryanne, and Jodi. In each of these cases, there were other students in my class, with those names, who looked similar to me. In most case, I also knew that the teacher had made a simple mistake and did in fact know my real name.

However, I am ashamed to say that I allowed a professor to mistakenly call me "Jodi" for the better part of a semester without ever correcting her. As silly as it sounds, I fretted constantly about finding an appropriate way to ensure that the professor knew who I was. Although I knew that I should correct her, I was unsure how to broach the subject in a way that wouldn't seem rude or disrespectful. I felt ashamed of myself for being so shy and non-confrontational that I couldn't simply pull her aside after class and mention the slip up. As the weeks wore on, and as my identity became more firmly cemented as "Jodi" within her mind, it became more and more difficult to raise the subject. Eventually, I emailed the professor and asked to meet with her during her office hours, under the guise of wanting to discuss my term paper. I never brought up the subject of my name, but after that meeting and the chance to speak with her one-on-one for an extended period, she seemed to associate the correct name with the correct face.

When it comes to winter accessories, my closet is a bit unbalanced. While I am swimming in scarves and have tons of tights, my glove collection is another story. I own just two pairs of gloves, one of which is now threadbare and pilling.

I currently drive to work so the amount of time I spend outside during the winter is limited. For this reason, it just hasn't been necessary to wear gloves. But after logging 25,000 miles/year on my car, I'm considering using public transportation for my daily commute. If I do make the jump to NJTransit, I will definitely need to add a new pair of gloves for the winter months. Here are a few pairs that have caught my eye:

Classic Camel

It's rare for a camel colored item to catch my attention. When wearing neutrals, I tend to reach for black, gray, and navy because they seem to work better with my complexion. But when I saw the classic a-line styling, textured twill, and oversized buttons on this Banana Republic skirt, I was sold. I knew this would be a go-to skirt for this fall and many more years to come.

The original retail price on this skirt was more than I wanted to pay. Luckily, I had a coupon as well as a $50 giftcard to Banana Republic that I received as part of the cashback/rewards program offered through my credit card company. The out-of-pocket cost to me was $10, which was much more manageable.

Happy Halloween!

I love to decorate for the holidays. Seasonal decor helps me to get in the holiday spirit, as well as notice and appreciate the passage of time. But after moving so frequently in recent years and coming to terms with the incredible volume of "stuff" that I own, I have vowed to limit the accumulation of new, unnecessary things: knick knacks, small kitchen appliances, and even holiday decor (and yes, I'm also trying to cut back on clothing purchases as well).

This year, I tried to simplify my Halloween decorations and take advantage of the things I already own. Here are a few snapshots of the Halloween decor in my kitchen:

According to the experts, peak color is right around the corner in New Jersey. I'm no expert, but the trees certainly seem to be parading in their brightest hues. I'm hopeful that the fiery colors will add some excitement and joy to my morning commute.

When I think of gingham fabric, I imagine midsummer picnics, country kitchens, and Dorothy's frilly frock in The Wizard of Oz.

I was never particularly fond of The Wizard of Oz. Admittedly, Dorothy had some fantastic shoes. But the movie's pacing felt too slow, the characters seemed one dimensional, and that yellow brick road was just sooo darn long. And I'm almost certain that The Wizard of Oz played a role in popularizing the handheld dog phenomenon. Poor Toto.

Shooting the Breeze (10.14.11 OOTD)

A few things jumped out at me as I edited the pictures for this post:

1). I need a haircut...badly. I've been throwing my hair in a ponytail for several weeks to conceal the ragged ends and uneven layers. But the sideswept bangs have gotten so long that I'm beginning to resemble Cousin It. It's not a great look. On top of that, these bangs are beginning to seriously impair my vision. I've bumped into stationary objects simply because I can't see out of my left eye. No joke.

2). I might be the only person to have bug bites in the middle of autumn. At one point during this summer, I had 18 bug bites. I had hoped the worst was over, but seems like the little critters are still managing to bite me. This occurence is even more amazing when you consider than I spend only about 90 seconds outside each day.

3). These pictures could double as an advertorial for HVAC systems. Somehow, I captured several air conditioning units and/or an exhaust vent in almost every picture. Yes, this post is brought to you courtesy of Frigidaire.

Water Lily

When I was eight years old, my family moved from northern California to a small town outside of Philadelphia. Although my memories have faded over the years, certain moments of that first summer are crystal clear: the smothering shock of East Coast humidity, the wonders of our basement (no such thing in California), and cardboard forts created from leftover moving boxes.

In our new house, my mother created a truly beautiful bedroom for me. Knowing my love for Monet, she found wallpaper and fabric that were reminiscent of his water lily paintings. My room had a loft bed with a "nook" underneath, where I could snuggle up with a good book and disappear for hours. When I saw the colors in this skirt, it instantly transported me back to those blissful days spent in my childhood bedroom.

We were the only ones in our extended family to live outside of California and the physical distance was difficult for all of us. At the same time, certain cultural differences were puzzling and alienating to my eight-year-old self. Some of the differences, such as the persistence of strict blue laws, required only a small lifestyle adjustment (e.g., no grocery shopping on Sundays). But there were other aspects that were not as easily managed. In California, for instance, it had not been uncommon to find mixed race couples and mixed race children. This was not the case in our new town, which was largely homogenous in its racial and ethnic composition. Immediately, I felt that being half Asian made me somehow different than the rest of the community. Well-meaning neighbors, for instance, were surprised to learn that my Chinese mother spoke without an accent and drank soda ("Wouldn't you prefer a cup of tea?"). These incidents were mostly humorous and could have happened just as easily in California or any part of the country. But in our small town, they certainly seemed to happen with greater frequency than ever before.

After four years, we moved back to California to be closer to family. Although I had some difficult experiences during those four years, I know that my horizons expanded and that I developed a stronger sense of identity as a result of being in a new, sometimes uncomfortable environment.

Ultimately, I returned to the East Coast for college and haven't left since. People will often question why I left California, moving away from my family (not to mention the perfect weather!). It's a tough question to answer. But having spent my formative years in this area, both as a tween and a college student, I now feel tied to the mid-Atlantic region. Despite a rocky start, I think I've found my niche.

If you were to peek inside my closet, you'd find an abundance of bright colors and quirky prints. No surprise, right? As I've said before, I could give Joseph (of the technicolor dreamcoat) a run for his money. Except that I don't have prophetic dreams. And I've never been sold into slavery by my brothers. And Potiphar's wife hasn't tried to seduce me.

So maybe the comparison to Joseph isn't so apt, after all. In any case, I've been passing over my rainbow-hued clothes in favor of simple, clean lines and subdued colors. No fuss, no frills. No over-the-top outerwear.

Blessings in Disquise

Hi, friends! The last six weeks have been rather eventful, but life finally seems to be slowing down to a more manageable pace.

In my last post, I wrote that I had survived Hurricane Irene, albeit with some minimal damage. There was minor flooding in my apartment -- a basement unit -- but nothing like the damage that many others experienced. However, the water wasn't removed from the basement for 10 days and mold started to grow at an alarming rate. I wasn't confident that the landlords would be able to restore the apartment to a livable condition, so I decided that it would be wiser to move to a new apartment rather than risk the health effects of living in my old apartment.

Unfortunately, I lost almost all of my furniture. After heavy applications of a bleach/vinegar mixture, I was able to salvage a dresser and two chairs, but everything else had to be discarded. My furniture wasn't expensive (most of it was purchased from Ikea) but I had scrimped and saved to purchase it during graduate school, and it was hard to let it go.

All things considered, I feel so very lucky. In light of the devastation in New York, Vermont, and other parts of New Jersey, I know that I could have fared so much worse. Other people have lost their homes and livelihoods with little prospect for relief, while I only had to throw out some MDF furniture.

Once I'm finally settled in, I'll be certain to post some pictures of my new place. It's a great apartment and I hope to be here for several years. My previous apartment was less than 400 square feet and was lacking an oven or any real closets. And since it was a basement unit, there wasn't any natural light to speak of. It fit the bill as a starter apartment and the rent allowed me to save quite a bit, but I was definitely ready for something new. My new place is worlds apart: I now have two bedrooms, eight windows (eight!!!), a large kitchen with an oven AND a dishwasher, hardwood floors, high ceilings, and three closets. I'm a happy camper, to say the least.

Hopefully I'll be back to posting outfits on a semi-regular basis. For now, here's a set of unposted pictures from earlier this summer, from my trip to California.

Hi, friends! I just wanted to pop in quickly and provide a brief update. The good news: I am incredibly relieved to be able to say that I survived Irene safely, as did the BF, his family, and his bulldog Winston.

It may be a few weeks before I'm back to blogging, however. Many parts of New Jersey have been without power since Saturday night/Sunday morning and the electric company tells us that it may not be restored until Sunday, Sept. 4th. As some of you know, I rent an apartment that's in the basement of a family's home in north Jersey. On Saturday night a live wire came down, landing on the driveway to my apartment. The driveway pavement was completely ruptured from the electricity. The street is still blocked off near the house since the wire is still live and very volatile. I was not home when it happened, but my landlords tell me that the fire department was very concerned that their house was going to explode. Thankfully, the house ended up being fine and my landlords are also safe.

Unfortunately, this exact same scenario happened just two weeks ago, in a previous storm, so my landlords need to replace the electrical system for the second time in two weeks. Because of the power outage, the sump pump wasn't functional and my apartment flooded with a small amount of water. It isn't much -- just an inch or two -- but it will be several weeks before the electricity can be restored, the basement dried out, the carpet replaced, and the apartment made habitable again. I had a feeling that my apartment might flood, so I moved my valuable items (including my favorite shoes!!!) off the floor prior to the hurricane, but there is still some damage.

My BF and his parents have graciously allowed me to stay with them until I can move back into my apartment. They are also without power, but a friend who was unaffected by the storm lent them a generator, so they are making do. All in all, we are doing well and are thankful to have fared as well as we have. In adjacent towns, there are residential areas that are under several feet of water, so we feel fortunate and blessed to have escaped the worst of it.

I hope that others were safe in the hurricane, as well. East Coast readers, how did the hurricane impact you?

Use It or Lose It: Birthday Edition

Guess what? Today's my birthday! Hip, hip, hooray!

This summer has been a bit busy and high-pressure, but I'm really looking forward to this weekend. BF's parents are hosting a joint birthday party for BF's brother (just turned 21 - oh, to be so young!) and me. Aren't they sweet to include me in the celebration? Next week I get to see my own family on the West Coast, which is a rare treat. I'm excited!

Sorry for the sour-puss expressions in the pictures below. I was actually in a great mood when these were taken, but the toothy grin pictures just didn't turn out.

Here's a question for those who own this skirt: How do you iron it? It is so wrinkle-prone, but the delicate details are an obstacle when trying to iron. Maybe I should try a steamer?

The wrinkles are actually the main reason I've considered surrendering this skirt after Jewish Girl's "Use It or Lose It" challenge. Each wear requires a 30+ minute session at the ironing board before this skirt looks presentable, and I still can't get the pleats to lay correctly. Sheesh.

Use it or Lose It: Have a Heart

Hi friends! Now that I'm back to blogging on a semi-regular schedule, I'm excited to start sharing the outfits that I created as part of Jewish Girl's Use it or Lose It challenge. I'm proud to say that, so far, I have worn three of the five skirts I selected for this challenge (see skirts here).

Okay...maybe three out of five isn't such a great average. After all, if this were a school assignment, I'd have a D-. But don't fret -- there is still time to wear the other two...

I'm relatively pleased with this outfit and think the skirt's a keeper. It was a decent price and the whimsical print is subtle enough to keep the skirt from feeling too young. However, it's a very short and lightweight skirt. On a breezy summer's day, this is a recipe for disaster. Through some combination of desperate skirt-clutching and awkward shuffling, I think I avoided flashing anyone while running errands. Next time, I'm wearing this slip underneath.

Sheesh -- I'm sure a bad blogger, aren't I? I knew I would need to step away from blogging for a few days to focus on work matters, but I had no intention of leaving this blog unattended for quite so long. Where did the last two weeks go? And what did I wear?

Judging by my ever-expanding pile of laundry, I think it's safe to say that I have been wearing clothes these past two weeks, regardless of the lack of photographic evidence. Well, that's a relief.

Fundraiser at the Races

Since so many readers were kind enough to help me decide what to wear to the races this weekend...here it is! Although the Eva Franco dress was the runaway favorite, I ultimately decided on the Tahari rose-print dress. The Tahari dress fits me like a glove and feels so flattering. I really, really like the Eva Franco dress, but I decided that that the neckline was a bit too low for this particular event. But, not to worry -- I will be certain to wear the EF frock (and my new hat) before the summer is over. And you've all given me some great styling tips on how to style the EF when I do wear it.

This was my first time at the races, and I had a blast. It's an exciting way to spend a day! BF and I bet on a few races, but didn't win anything. I don't think I could ever be a gambler. I only bet small change but every time I lost, I thought "You know, I could have a bought a skirt from the thrift store with that money!" I think the same thing when buying a gallon of gas. I'm a cheapskate...

Happy Sunday, everyone! I hope you've all had an enjoyable weekend so far.

Thank you again to everyone who weighed in to help me decide what to wear to this weekend's fundraising event. You guys are the best and your comments really helped me to make my decision. I ended up loving my outfit and will be posting pictures tomorrow!

Given the timing of this promotion, I thought it would be apropos to post a brief review of my favorite BR purchase of the summer: the Claire Top Handle Shoulder Bag (edit: alp16 helpfully commented that this promotion doesn't apply to accessories. What a shame! But watch for future promotions, with fewer restrictions!)

I have been very drawn to this season's handbags -- structured crossbodies, top-flap satchels, and luxe hardware are all calling my name. And while I would love to own something like this, the price point is undeniably cost-prohibitive. When I spotted the Claire handbag from Banana Republic, it seemed to combine all three of these elements. The retail price is a steep $298, but if you watch for an applicable promotion, you can probably get this for around $100 (I paid $105). Not inexpensive by any stretch of the imagination, but much more feasible than many designer options.

Pros:

Materials: This bag features soft, supple, high-quality leather and well-made hardware. The materials are certainly as good as anything else you'll find for $100-$150. Even at the $300 price, I would consider the quality to be worthwhile.
Size: At 13" x 9.5" x 5.5", this bag is large enough to hold all my daily essentials: wallet, keys, sunglasses, personal cell, work cell, make-up bag, pencil case, camera, gum, lunch, and a small novel. On occasion, I've also shoved the Times and an umbrella in here, as well. I suspect a Macbook Air would just fit.
Pockets, pockets, pockets! Inside the bag, there are two slip pockets, perfect for cell phones or a pack of gum. There is also a cavernous larger zip pocket; it's so deep that I lost my camera in there for a few days! The purse also features two external pockets. I've found the front slip pocket to be a handy place to stash my keys.
Color: The product description calls this color "Almond" which seems an apt name. Highly versatile, but dark enough that it won't show stains too easily.
Handles: Love having the option to carry this either by the chain (nickel, perhaps?) or the shoulder strap. The sturdy chain is attached to the purse with oversized grommets, so no need to worry that carrying the purse by the chain will place any stress on the leather.

Cons:

Shoulder strap could be just a tad shorter. It is adjustable, but even the shortest length seems a bit long on me. I am considering punching additional holes into the strap
Almost wish this came in multiple colors. It would be gorgeous in a rich cognac with brass hardware!
The front buckle really needs to be in the closed position whenever you're carrying the purse. Nothing major, but this means that it takes a few extra moments to open it whenever you need something from your purse.

What to Wear? Your help needed!

Hello, friends! I have a bit of an outfit dilemma, so I am turning to my readers for some sage sartorial advice.

As I mentioned in this post, I'll be headed to the races this weekend for a fundraising event. This will be my first time attending any sort of equestrian event, so I'm uncertain of the dress code. Normally, I would imagine that ladies' attire for such an event would consist of pastel dresses in floaty fabrics and floppy sun hats. But here's the rub: the event starts at 6:00 PM, is indoors, and features a "lavish" dinner (per the invitation). I'm wondering if a light and airy daytime frock will be too casual for this event?

G'morning, friends! Just a quickie post today...

First things first, I feel the need to point out that the title of this post does indeed have one "p", not two. Otherwise, you might be led to believe that this blog has taken a very different direction!

I'm still a new convert to the maxi dress trend, but this striped maxi dress, as well as the one worn here have made me wish that the summer could last forever. I wore this dress to a barbecue over the weekend and was glad to have my legs covered -- like Pamela of Ginger Girl mentioned , a maxi dress works double duty as a mosquito deterrent. At one point last summer, I had 18...yes, 18...itchy, red bug bites at one time. And you wonder why I don't like camping.

On Saturday, I'll be attending some horse races as a fundraising event. I've never been to any sort of equestrian event, so I'm not certain what to expect. In my head, I'm picturing scenes from My Fair Lady, so my knowledge of the sport is a bit limited, to say the least. If you have any tips for me, they would be much appreciated!

Mill-ing Around

One of the things that I love about living on the East Coast is the abundance of historic locations and structures. Take, for example, the setting for these pictures. The building was once used as a mill and dates to 1737. It feels awe-inspiring to be in the presence of buildings that have been in existence since a nation's formative years.

Of course, this building has since been converted to a counseling center and yoga studio. I might have to try a yoga class after all. But with such a gorgeous backdrop, I'm afraid I would make for one distracted student.

PS. I considered several alternative titles for this post, including "Who wants to be a mill-ionaire" and "How I made my first mill-ion." But on a Monday morning, I decided to hold my corny sense of humor in check.

Are you ready for another "Jamie's a mess" story?

As part of my morning routine, I use rosewater as a toner on my face. It has a fresh, delicate scent and is much gentler on the skin than some of the products sold specifically as toners. Yesterday I put a little rosewater onto a cotton ball and proceeded to apply it to my face as usual, starting around my eyes.

I was met with an incredibly painful stinging sensation, and had to cover my mouth to keep from screaming (And I'm not a screamer. Not even when faced with rodents, large insects, or fear-inspiring roller coasters). After the pain subsided and my eyes stopped streaming tears, I looked down at the bottle of rosewater. But it wasn't rosewater at all -- it was nail polish remover. Both liquids come in clear pink bottles and are similarly sized. Ouch.

I had a slight rash, but it disappeared by the time I got to work. My mornings are always a bit frenzied, but I really need to start reading the labels on household items -- especially when I'm in a rush. There was also that time I accidentally doused a jacket with Lysol, thinking it was Febreeze. A good laugh, but at this rate, it's only a matter of time before I start a fire.

I'm sorry, teacher! You know I always mistake hydrogen for helium...

Do you all read Kayla's blog, Internal Sequin Issues? A few days ago, she posted an outfit inspired the word juxtaposition. Kayla's high school English teacher had a fondness for the word (as did mine!), and her post took me back to my scholarly days. Disclaimer: I'm about to reveal my inner geek. If that's not your cup of tea, feel free to skim the text and just look at the pictures instead!

As a former English major, I have always been interested in etymologies. One of my favorite examples is the etymology for the word flourish (on my mind, because the scrolls on my skirt are most definitely flourishes). Flourish can be used either as a verb or noun, and originates from the Latin word flōrēre meaning "to bloom," which creates interesting implications for the word's denotative and connotative uses.

By definition, flourish can be used as a verb to convey any of the following actions:

     *to be in a vigorous state
     *to be in one's prime
     *to grow luxuriantly, or thrive in growth, as a plant

*to add embellishments and ornamental lines to writing, letters, etc.

And it can also be used as a noun to signify any of the following objects:

*an ostentatious display

*a decoration or embellishment, especially in writing

What I find interesting is the etymological link between a description of natural growth -- or flowering -- and ornamental decoration, which is usually conceived of as man-made embellishment rather than natural beauty. Whereas flourish usually has a positive connotation when used as a verb to signify natural growth, it often connotes excess and artifice when used as a noun. So here is my question: when does luxuriant growth become ostentation? (That's rhetorical, so you don't have to answer. Unless you feel compelled to do so, in which case you should feel free)

My apologies for this atypical, quasi-academic rambling. As you can surely surmise, I occasionally long for my days as an English student. Apologies also for lifting the above definitions from Dictionary.com. Unfortunately, my subscription to the online Oxford English Dictionary expired when I graduated...

For a relatively tidy person, I seem to be inordinately prone to getting food stains on my clothing. Coffee, ketchup, mustard, marinara sauce, chocolate, and pizza grease have all made their presence known on some of my favorite clothing items. And somehow, I only ever have these mishaps when wearing delicate, dry-clean only clothing. In fact, I avoid eating salad at work simply for fear of dripping salad dressing on myself.

When I arrived at work after successfully avoiding any food spillage, I was quite proud of myself. Until I realized that I had somehow managed to snag the zipper of my computer bag on the intricate, daisy-patterned lace of this skirt. Quite literally, I was attached at the hip to my laptop. It took me a good five minutes to shimmy the zipper away from the skirt so I could sit down. Sigh...

Thrifty Thursday: All Quiet on the Eastern Front (7.6.11 OOTD)

As you'll surely notice, there is a fountain behind me in many of these pictures. As fountains are wont to do, it creates soothing ambient noise while also providing visual appeal.

But as I was wrapping up yesterday's photoshoot, the fountain simply stopped running. Regardless of what time I leave work, the fountain is always running. I'm not certain if there was a technical glitch or if someone turned it off. But either way, it was eerie without the constant lull of running water. I made haste and departed for home -- the absolute quietness left me feeling ironically disquieted and unsettled. I was reminded of a scene from Did You Hear About the Morgans in which the main characters commiserate that they have trouble sleeping without the accustomed cacophany of sirens, drunken brawls, and the like. Does anyone else feel uncomfortable when things are just too quiet?

Nonetheless, I did have a chance to snap not one, but two outfits, before the stillness descended. What does this mean for you? A double dose of Thrifty Thursday outfits!

Greetings! For all the Americans and Canadians folks, I hope you had a fantastic holiday weekend.

Tuesday was back to business as usual, and business casual attire. You've heard the saying that people should eat three "square" meals per day? Well, I think of this as a "square" outfit. It's not particularly inventive or inspired, but it hits all the necessary points: work appropriate, polished, acceptable fit, and cheap. Hey, it's hip to be square, right?

Here's a question for my sartorially creative readers: what else can I do with a square scarf? As you can see below, I tied it around a few of my belt loops. It wasn't long enough to use as a proper belt, but I still wanted to incorporate the print into the outfit somehow. I tried tying it in a bow around my neck, but the fabric was rather stiff and the scarf just didn't "fall" right. Any tips for me?

Neon Trees (6.30.11)

My wardrobe would make any color-phile proud, but there was a noticeable derth of neon. And I was perfectly content to continue wearing my pastels and primaries. Or so I thought...

Pretty soon, without even realizing that I was following a trend, I added two fluorescent yellow items to my closet (see here and here). Next, I saw Ashley's fantastic outfit combining neon and neutral, and learned that there had recently been a Bloggers Do It Better challenge on this very combination. I missed the challenge, of course, but thought I'd try my hand at injecting a bit of neon into an otherwise neutral outfit.

Polka dots are neutral, right?

Looks like somebody drank the (electric blue) Kool-Aid. Luckily, Kool-Aid comes cheap. This purse has been in my closet for years, and it was definitely time to put it to use.

Nacho Usual Outfit Photos (6.28.11 OOTD)

Hi, friends!

BF has been out of town since Tuesday, and will be back late on Friday night. While he's away, I'm missing a few things:

1) My photographer, and his DSLR
2) My personal chef
3) And him, of course!

When I started blogging, I took my own photos for the first six months or so. BF has been helping me out since January, after receiving a DSLR over the holidays. I had forgotten how difficult it is to take outfit photos of oneself, especially when using a point-and-shoot camera without a remote! Here was one of my shots from Tuesday -- proof that I should not pursue a career in photography:

Eventually, I did snap the pictures below. Improvement -- progress is good.

And how is the meal prep going, now that I don't have a personal chef to cook for me? Well, let's just say I ate nachos for dinner last night. Yep. In all fairness, I did use baked tortilla chips, black beans, guacamole hummus (delish!), and just a sprinkling of extra sharp cheddar. I didn't get home from work until after 10:30, and I couldn't bring myself to make anything else. But still, I can't shake the feeling that I ate junk food for dinner last night...

It's a good thing he's back on Friday!

I'm a bit late to the Glee game. Don't get me wrong, I love the show. But I've only seen 1.5 seasons. This is what happens when you're too cheap to pay for any type of television service and opt to watch everything on Netflix instead.

However, all the money I've saved on cable helps me to expand my own collection of Emma Pillsbury's clothing. Like the "Trampoline Skirt" by Anna Sui. On the rare occasions when this skirt pops up on Ebay, the final auction price is always way over my budget. Imagine my delight when the skirt was listed with a buy-it-now option at a reasonable price. You might even say I was Gleeful.

My most coveted Emma items? The ladybug necklace (check!), Trampoline skirt (check!), Kate Spade Floral Josie Dress, and Kate Spade Daffodil Valerie Jacket. Two down, two to go.

Given WWEPW's calculation of Emma's wardrobe cost, I might need to start cutting some other things out of my budget as well. Like food and shelter.

Toucan Sam (6.19.11 OOTD)

Although I try to avoid cluttering my apartment with tsotchkes, I make an exception for toucan paraphernalia. I'm a bit obsessed with the tropical birds. Did you know that it is legal to own a toucan as a pet within the United States? Incredible, but true (read here).

In my dream house, I would have a heated aviary replete with my very own Toucan Sam. I just need to save $10,000+ to purchase a toucan, and however much it costs to build the aviary. No problem.

Until then, I'll just satisfy my toucan obsession with this Marc by Marc Jacobs dress. If you look very closely, you can see that a toucan print has been woven into the silk jacquard fabric. And while MMJ is pricey, it is certainly a lot less expensive than buying the bird...especially since the dress was 60% off at Saks.

Hi friends!

I'm not certain about you guysI had a particularly enjoyable weekend -- I had the pleasuring of meeting up at Anthropologie with Jen of Vintageglammz (who was visiting all the way from Australia!), Kelly of Fashion Fuel, and Stephanie of Bar Chic!

It was such a treat to spend time with these wonderful ladies and browse all the pretty things at Anthro. We also had the most delicious macarons from La Maison du Chocolat. I didn't end up purchasing any new items on this trip, but I do have a few things added to the top of my wishlist (like this and this). And I have a special OOTD to show you, just as soon as the pics are ready.

And here's an outfit from Saturday. This ensemble might not seem that revolutionary, but it definitely bridges some new territory for me:

1). Shorts. Short shorts. And I'm not exercising in them.
2). Heels with those shorts.
3). Denim. And it's not on my lower half.
4). A cardigan that's longer than those short shorts. (Scandalous! Is she even wearing shorts?!)

Despite this outfit being out of character, I actually loved it.

All Yoked Up - Golden Yoke Top (6.11.11 OOTD)

For whatever reason, the majority of my Anthropologie purchases are either cardigans, skirts, or dresses. I usually skip over the "Tops" section when browsing Anthropologie's website. While I scour the sale section for dresses and skirts, I typically just give the sale blouses and tops a perfunctory glance. Nothing against Anthro's selection of blouses, of course, but I think I am just a skirt and dress gal at heart.

During the tag sale, however, I made a conscious effort to check out Anthro's tops. I was pleasantly surprised by the Golden Yoke Top. The sequins, color, airy fabric, and drape are all so beautiful. And now, I have been gazing longingly at the Treasured Depths Tank as well.

For you fellow Anthrophiles, are there any tops or blouses that have caught your interest? Do share!

EBEW Lace: Eye for an Eyelet Skirt (6.10.11 OOTD)

I did it, guys. I wore sky-high, 5" heels to work.

I've done this before (here and here), but both times I disguised my shoes by hiding the heel height under a long pair of pants.

Not this time. These fierce, not-so-little platforms were exposed in all their tall glory. I wore this outfit on a casual Friday and I think it was acceptable within my office setting. I certainly wouldn't have tried this on a typical Monday-Thursday workday, or if we were having visitors. But I think the fact that I am covered from neck to knee keeps this outfit conservative enough.

But, enough about the shoes. Today is "lace" day at Everybody, Everywear! Be sure to see what all the folks are wearing. As you know, I am a huge fan of lace. For my part, I pulled out a vibrant coral skirt from J. Crew that I thrifted for $4.50. The fabric is a very subtle eyelet lace, so it was perfect for this week's EBEW challenge.

J. Crew Wave Tank and Banana Republic Bonanza (6.12.11 OOTD)

Don't you wish the weekend could last forever? I certainly do. Saturday and Sunday were jam-packed with fun activities that left me smiling...

BF and I received tickets to see the musical Memphis, and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The show boasts spirited music, an engaging plot line, a smart sense of humor, and a complex love story. See it!

After the show, we ate at Toloache Bistro Mexicana. BTW, we tried Oaxacan-style dried grasshoppers. They were surprisingly palatable. In fact, they tasted a lot like...grass.

On Sunday, we dined at Son Cubano in West New York (which is actually in Jersey) with the BF's family to celebrate the official completion of his master's degree. Besides breath-taking views of Manhattan and superb food, the restaurant had one more positive: Anthro-esque decor!

I also found some major steals at Banana Republic this weekend. The retail stores are currently offering an additional 40% off on already-reduced items. I cheerfully left the store with the Ruffled Belted Trench in Glen Olive ($30), Denim Shirt in Blue ($17), and Shabby-Chic Leather Flats in Taupe Metallic ($36). The online prices are quite a bit higher, so shopping in-store will save you beaucoup bucks.

All in all, a great weekend. This is what I wore to dinner on Sunday night. I was a tad worried that I might be underdressed, but the uber-chic hostess complimented my top, which was reassuring.

Hi, y'all!

When the Calypso St. Barth collection was released at Target, I wasn't especially eager to scope out the items. Although the prints were gorgeous, resort wear is a style that just doesn't get a lot of use in my closet. But when I saw the Tie-Dyed Maxi Dress, I changed my mind. The bright color and diagonal stripes were mesmerizing. And the breezy cotton silhouette just screamed "tropical island." I don't have any exotic vacations planned this summer, but if a $40 dress can give me a taste of paradise I think that's money well spent.

On a shopping trip to Target, I pointed the dress out to the BF and asked his opinion. His response: "It's nice, but it doesn't look like something you would wear." Naturally, I interpreted his comment as a dare and determined that I needed the dress, if only to prove BF wrong. After searching five different Target locations for this dress, I broke down and ordered this dress online. Thanks to LC's review, I knew exactly what size to order and the dress fit perfectly.

Oh, and this pretty little bag was a Memorial Day acquisition from the Kate Spade outlet. I debated whether the "Citronella" color would be practical for everyday use. But then I remembered that the fluorescent color would be appreciated next time I need to use my purse as a makeshift desk while highlighting a document. No need to fear stray highlighter marks. This may sound far-fetched, but if you look in my closet, you will find a green purse that has been "enhanced" with red permanent marker. And no, I don't have a five-year-old child.

Power of Suggestion (5.27.11 OOTD)

When I purchased this skirt, it was accompanied by a tag suggesting that the skirt be worn with a utility jacket. That seemed like a great idea to me -- the perfect way to counter the frilly sweetness with a bit of an edge. I didn't own any "utility" jackets at the time, but I promptly started a search for the perfect one. I suppose you could say that I am open to new ideas (or easily swayed by marketing campaigns?).

This olive green knit blazer from Lucky Brand fit the bill. It is softly structured, incredibly comfortable, and machine washable. Best of all, it was on sale for $30. Sold.

In my previous post, a few people mentioned that they had been searching for a lace-trimmed half slip similar to mine. I purchased the Farr West "Heirloom Rose" slip from Lord and Taylor, but also found it online here. I have this slip both in ivory and black (worn here), and love them both.
